Rattlers give Hays baseball team St. Patrick’s Day pinch

Destination Imagination

We featured Elm Grove Elementary’s state meet-qualifying Destination Imagination team earlier this year and we’re proud to report the Eagles’ team of Lydia Strickland, Adam Zamrik, Garrett Stanford, Kat Gallagher, Jacob Miller and Neely Kirkland recently earned a sixth place at the state competition in Carrolton, Texas. The team is coached by teachers Stefanie Hicks and Stephanie Smith.

Local UIL season comes to an end

Lehman and Hays High School regional UIL participants enjoyed a great trip to Sam Houston State University in Huntsville recently, although no local competitor qualified for state competition. Lehman’s Computer Programming team of Donald Schiwitz, Samantha Williamson, Trevor Leffert and Cameron Harris scored the district’s high water mark with a third place finish, narrowly missing the advance to state. Congratulations go out to the district champ Hays Rebels, as well as the Lehman Lobos for yet another great year of UIL achievement.

Chess tourney Saturday

The 4th Annual Krasnoff District Chess Tournament is set for this Saturday, May 8, at Elm Grove Elementary. Featuring students from 3rd-12th grade, the 150 students expected will have five-rounds, with no elimination in a Swiss-style tourney. USCF Chess Master Paul Chaplin will serve as director and standard USCF rules will be in effect. Check-in begins at 9 a.m., games begin at 10 a.m. and the event should end at approximately 3:30 p.m. Cost is $3 for early entrants and $5 at the door. For more information or to donate food, drinks or gift cards, email [email protected]

Tech showcase on horizon

The 5th Annual Hays CISD Tech Showcase is scheduled for Thursday, May 20, 6-8 p.m., at the Performing Arts Center. Organizers say this event is “designed to allow teachers and students the opportunity to share with the community, fellow teachers and students the ‘out of this world’ technology projects that are happening in this district.” For more information, email [email protected].

No hate at Negley

Negley Elementary School recently earned a “No Place for Hate” banner, awarded by the Anti-Defamation League. The campus will gather for a June 1 assembly in a formal presentation of the banner.

PEP seeks shoes

The Hays CISD Pregnancy, Education and Parenting (PEP) Program is seeking donations of closed-toe shoes, size 0-3, for the children of local high school students. To donate new or slightly-worn shoes, contact Katie Campbell at [email protected] or leave them at the front office of either Hays High School or Lehman High School.

Correct ID of photographer

Last week we shared a great photo out of Science Hall Elementary, with Principal Angela Nelson receiving a pair of wonderful donations for a campus marquee. We credited the photo, but with a first name error. Our apologies to photographer Charlene White, who really shouldn’t have to answer to “Christine” any more!
