Hays High School’s remarkable one act play production, Rabbit Hole, closed out its 2010 competition run last week at Brenham High School, having made the Area round with earlier advances from both Zone and District. Hays theatre director Dana Naughton’s charges reaped multiple awards along the way, as did Lehman counterpart Marissa Meek’s students in Zone competition.
Naughton noted her group’s pride – and fatigue – after a 19-hour day hitting the road to compete in their school’s first Area appearance in four years.
“I could not be more proud of them,” Naughton said. “Their behavior was exquisite and their compassion for those around them brought tears to many eyes.”
Several members of the audience approached the Hays students to say how much the play had touched them.
Lehman High School cast and crew members earning recognition in recent One Act Play zone competition included (standing) Phillip Smith; (seated, left to right) Jackie Fuller, Lauren Garcia, Desiree Kittel and Bekka Cygan. Smith, Fuller and Garcia were All Star Cast, Kittel was Honorable Mention All Star Cast and Cygan was All Star Crew for the 2010 play, “Arms and the Man.” (Photo by Marissa Meek)
Both Luke Leamons and Hannah Hadidi gathered All Star Cast recognition at Thursday’s Area round, Kelsey White and Madison White were noted for Honorable Mention All Star Cast and Silas Brown and Madeline Harsh received Tech Award honors.
Those awards largely reflected the opinion of judges all the way back to Zone results, where Madison White was named Best Actress, Leamons and Kelsey White made All Star Cast, Hadidi and Zackary Garcia were Honorable Mention All Star Cast and Brown was Best Tech. At District competition days later, Leamons and Madison White were named to All Star Cast, Hadidi and Garcia were Honorable Mention All Star Cast and Stefan Sanchez won the Best Tech Award.
Lehman’s 2010 play entry, Arms and the Man, placed as Alternate in Zone competition with Phillip Smith, Jackie Fuller and Lauren Garcia named to the All Star Cast, Desiree Kittel receiving Honorable Mention All Star Cast and Bekka Cygan named to the All Star Crew. Director Marissa Meek assessed the production as “exceptional” and credited its success to the “efforts and support of all the students involved, their families and the community.”
