Health Fair and Carnival at Science Hall
Science Hall Elementary School hosts its Health Fair and Carnival this Saturday, April 10, 9 a.m.–noon. The PE Department-hosted event offers free health care stations and carnival armbands are $5. Drinks and snacks will be sold. For more information, contact Matthew Burton at [email protected].
Saturday is Chapa 5K
It’s here! The 4th Annual Chapa 5K Challenge is this Saturday, April 10. Online registration is available now. Proceeds go to fitness projects for Chapa faculty, students and their families. Registration is $5 for elementary students, $10 for middle and high school students and $15 for participants 19 and older. Lehman Project Graduation will offer PowerAde as a fundraiser. Empty Bowl at Lehman Tuesday
Lehman High School offers its Empty Bowl Project next Tuesday, April 13, 6-8 p.m., in the cafeteria. Lehman’s Debra Flynn explains the project dedicates funds “to our global neighbors – purchasing animals to provide a sustainable lifestyle for families – and our local neighbors, with money going to the food bank.” Participants buy a student-crafted bowl, the Lobo Culinary Department is offering a pasta dinner, live music is on tap and a ticket to a Lehman theatre production (A Tuna Christmas) is also included in the price. Barton choirs sing Tuesday
Barton Middle School’s three choirs perform in a free public concert next Tuesday, April 13, 7 p.m., at the Barton cafeteria. The Concert Treble Choir performs Charlotte-Town, By the Sea and Gute Nacht. The Men’s Choir follows with One More River, Will You Still Love Me? and She Walks in Beauty. The Varsity Treble Choir, headed to UIL contest three days later, performs Come, Jesus Holy Son of God, Medieval Gloria and White Bird, Silver Bird.
College fairs set
The NACAC Austin College Fair is set for Tuesday, April 13 and bus transportation for high school juniors from their campuses will be provided (register at campus counseling office). Buses will also be provided for the National Hispanic College Fair April 23. Registration is free and the fair is open to all students.
Jackson chosen for conference
Tobias Elementary Principal Kristi Jackson has been chosen to attend “Strong Libraries, Strong Scores,” a meeting in conjunction with the Texas Library Association annual conference in San Antonio. Inspired by former first lady Laura Bush’s June 2002 White House Conference on School Libraries, the Texas meeting aims to inform and incite change in the ways Texas schools use libraries to improve student achievement.
Autism Awareness kickoff
Wallace Middle School recently kicked off Autism Awareness Month by hosting Rupert Isaacson, father of a child with autism and author of The Horse Boy, book and documentary. The author described autism to his audiences, telling them that it is diagnosed in one out of every 110 individuals. He also related how his family trekked to Mongolia, seeking healing from shamans. Isaacson spoke with students individually and signed autographs following his talks.
Cinderella’s Closet opens
Lehman High School registrar Rosa Munoz reports her Cinderella’s Closet is open for business to all students and HCISD employees needing to borrow evening wear for prom or other special occasions. Tux rental coupons, men’s suits, ties, ladies’ shoes and evening purses are available. A current need is for donated costume jewelry. Dress donations are always welcomed, as are cash contributions. The stylish closet opens every Thursday and Friday during lunch for Lehman students; others please call Munoz at 268-8454, ext. 7616, for an appointment.
Fundraiser forecast
• Elm Grove Elementary will be hosting Dad’s Club Rummage Sale Sat., April 10, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. The sale will benefit the end-of-year dance.
• Lehman Project Graduation will host Bingo Night Friday, April 16, 6 p.m. at the Uhland Community Center.
