Punishing those for who they are

STAFF REPORTS

A grant from the St. David’s Foundation will help provide low-cost dental services in the CommuniCare Health Center under construction in Kyle, CommuniCare leaders announced this week.

The St. David’s Foundation, a joint owner of St. David’s Healthcare, awarded the $852,000 grant to help fund the construction of a dental wing in the 20,732-square-foot health center that is slated to open this September two miles east of IH-35 in Kyle. The clinic will provide medical, dental and behavioral health services to uninsured and underserved residents in Hays County.

“This grant will provide a state-of-the-art dental facility that will enable CommuniCare to provide critically needed dental services to children, individuals and families in the Kyle area,” Debbora A. Thompson, Chief Executive Officer of CommuniCare Health Centers, said in a news release. “St. David’s Foundation has a great track record of helping to provide dental care at schools and clinics across Central Texas.”

Based in San Antonio, CommuniCare Health Centers (CCHC) had more than more than 151,000 visits in 2009 in its two health centers in San Antonio and one in San Marcos, the release said.

The non-profit health centers serve those with Medicaid, Medicare, medical insurance and those that do not have insurance, charging on a sliding-fee scale based on annual household income and family size.

Construction of the Kyle clinic is funded largely through a $1.447 million federal grant through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
