Mariachi on Riverwalk
Lehman High and Simon Middle School director Adolph Ortiz reports Mariachi Azul y Plata (his non-varsity ensemble) will be performing on the San Antonio Riverwalk tonight, Wednesday, April 21, 7-8 p.m., as part of the city’s annual Paseo del Rio Festival.
Negley Goes Green
Negley Elementary hosts “Negley Goes Green,” its second Earth Day festival, tomorrow night, April 22, 6-7:30 p.m. Staff, families and community agencies will promote environmental stewardship and appreciation of nature. Hands-on activities, demonstrations, a student project showcase, a fourth grade Trash to Treasure Challenge and a Go Green Fashion Show (student-modeled jewelry and accessories made from recyclables) highlight the evening. The event is free, but wishing well donations are appreciated and will be used to create outdoor learning opportunities.
Lehman theatre fest set
The Lehman High School Theatre Festival hits the stage this Thursday-Sunday, April 22-25, with a succession of senior-directed play excerpts. Two shows will be performed Thursday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and three additional shows will be performed Friday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. The offerings range from modern comedy to drama to old-fashioned melodrama. Tickets are $3 for students and senior citizens, $4 for adults.
College Fair Friday
The National Hispanic College Fair (open to all ethnicities) is offered at Austin’s Frank Erwin Center this Friday, April 23, 9 a.m. – noon. Local juniors are encouraged to sign up at their campus College and Career Centers to get a permission slip for a free bus ride to the event. National recruiters will be available to talk with students and parents about admissions and financial aid.
STEM applications due
Applications for the HCISD pilot magnet program in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are available at www.hayscisd.net and deadline for turn-in is Friday, April 30. They may be dropped off at or mailed to HCISD, 21003 Interstate 35, Kyle, Texas 78640. Called Saturn V, the program will be located at Ralph Pfluger Elementary and Carpenter Hill Elementary for fourth and fifth grade students. Half of the available program slots will be open to students at any district elementary.
Summer theatre camp set
Registration is open for the 18th annual Hays High School Theatre Day Camp, set for Monday - Friday, June 7-11, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Burdine Johnson Theatre. All materials, costumes, supplies and t-shirts are provided for the $170 registration fee. Additional family members are $80. Enrollment is limited to 20 students and registration closes May 21. Summer art camp offered
Summer art camp will be offered at Negley Elementary School this June 14-18, 9 a.m.-2 p.m., by art teacher Amy Cigainero. The camp includes kindergarten through fifth grade students.
