Buda Bits

by SANDRA GRIZZLE

Twin sisters Winnie Harper Moyer and Minnie Harper of Buda are the subjects for the latest oral history by the Hays County Historical Commission. The free video will be shown Friday, June 4, at 6 p.m., at the Driftwood Community Center, located on FM 150, behind the Driftwood Methodist Church.

The twins are descended from one of the oldest families in Hays County. They grew up in the Antioch Colony, just west of Buda, which was formed as one of the first black communities in Hays County. In the early days of their life, the girls worked with their brothers and sisters in helping their father, George Harper, who farmed cotton, cane and vegetables.

Today, Winnie and Minnie continue to live in Buda and are very active in this community.

Like to play Texas Hold’um Poker? If so, sign up for the tournament coming up on Sunday afternoon, June 27. Not only do you get to play a fun game, but you also will help the Onion Creek Senior Citizens in Buda by adding to the their building funds for a new center. Registration is a $30 donation. Call Richard Harlow at 512-626-4038 today for an application or visit [email protected] for information.
