I would like to bring some attention and awareness to the conditions at the Kyle Cemetery. This historic cemetery is located about 3 miles southwest of the City of Kyle on CR 137. The land was given by Claiborne Kyle as a burial ground many years prior to the founding of the Town of Kyle in 1880. Unlike other cemeteries along Old Stagecoach Road, this one has no identifying sign at the entrance. A Texas State Historical Marker, dedicated on May 15, 1993, is located inside the cemetery – not legible from the road.
Time and vandalism are taking their toll on this historic place. Repairs and upgrades are long overdue. A commonsense starting place is at the entrance…a gated entrance with the name of the cemetery visible to all who pass. The next logical step would be to repair the roadways throughout the grounds. In order to avoid large potholes, visitors are being forced to drive “around” them. In so doing, they are driving over existing graves and damaging markers. Another important effort would be regarding the grave stones and markers. Due to age and vandalism, many are leaning, fallen, and broken. Attention to some would prevent them becoming broken. Repairs to others would preserve them.
I know that all cemeteries have their historical significance. The unique thing about the Kyle Cemetery is that this one is ours and she needs a little TLC. There is no question that the above issues need to be addressed. There is also no question that lack of funds is the main obstacle. Perhaps you would be interested in sharing ideas or donating time, materials, equipment or even money to this cause. Although I do not serve on the cemetery board, I have been assured by Jane Kirkham of the Kyle Cemetery Commission that any help would be appreciated.
