Animal shelters in and around Hays County are in dire need of help.
Three shelters in Hays County are participating in Clear the Shelters, an adoption and donation campaign that strives to find forever homes for animals in shelters across the nation. KXAN in Austin is spearheading the event for shelters in Central Texas through Sept. 18.
San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter (SMRAS) and PAWS Shelter of Central Texas in Dripping Springs and Kyle are offering specials during Clear the Shelters to encourage adoptions and free up space in their shelters. SMRAS currently has 234 cats and dogs while PAWS has around 130 at both locations.
SMRAS will be offering a discounted adoption fees on Sept. 18 for the event. They are encouraging adopters to come to the shelter in person as they work on a first come, first serve basis. Adoptions can be finalized over the phone if the pet is currently in foster care and not at the facility.
Both PAWS shelters will have adoption specials on Sept. 4 and Sept. 18. These adoption days will be by appointment only, and adopters will need to have their application in the day before to be eligible for an appointment. Visit pawsshelter.org/adopt to book an appointment.
If you are unable to adopt but still wish to help out the shelters, both shelters have Amazon wish lists for donations which can be found on their websites. Monetary donations can also be made to SMRAS over the phone and to PAWS at pawsshelter.org/donate. Additionally, all three shelters offer foster programs.
A list of other Central Texas animal shelters participating in Clear the Shelters can be found on KXAN’s website.
