An amazing event occurred at Texas Old Town Oct 24th. The community came together to help one of their own with stage 3 melanoma who has no health insurance and cannot work. After expenses, $32,000 was raised because the community wanted to help. Over 800 people came out to buy meal tickets, to purchase raffle tickets and to bid on over 150 donated items for the silent auction. No tax deduction was offered. No special recognition was provided or expected. Thousands of dollars were simply donated by cash, check or over the Internet using PayPal.
Only $2,000 worth of items was purchased and that was at a discount. No administrative expense! No foundation was required to run this amazing event. The facilities were donated. Most of the food and all the raffle and auction items were donated.
Nobody was looking for a bargain. They wanted to help led by their faith and human kindness.
Literally hundreds of volunteers gave their time and talents as cheerful givers! The truth is we get more out of giving than receiving. It was pure joy watching the love!
I saw people I had not seen in 40 years but I also saw some who are newer residents who did not know Freddie or his family show up to offer their support. If you did not have the opportunity to help, there is still time. See www.friendsoffreddie2010.com.
Together we made a difference. I’m extremely proud of our community. As we grow larger I hope we can repeat the miracle of October 24th. Thanks be to God.
