Cyberbullying workshops set

The first of two free workshops on cyber-bullying is set for Thursday, Jan. 27, 6:30 p.m. at Simon Middle School. “Youth and Cyberbullying; What Families Don’t Know Will Hurt Them,” is offered to increase understanding and awareness of the problem. The workshop will offer adults strategies to discuss and respond to their children’s experiences with cyberbullying, and to help their children ally with others experiencing the abuse. Due to subject matter, the workshop is not suitable for children under 11. Middle school and high school students are welcome. A second workshop is scheduled for March 1 at Carpenter Hill Elementary.

Instructional Technology.” Students at all grade levels are encouraged to enter their original art work representing the theme and the overall winner’s work will be used in Showcase advertisement. Prizes will be awarded for elementary, middle, and high school categories. Deadline for entries is Friday, Feb. 25, at 4 p.m. Links for contest criteria and an entry submission form can be found under the district website’s “District News” menu at “Technology Showcase Logo Contest.” For more information or help with entering, contact Ann Ybarbo at [email protected].

Financial Aid Saturdays

The first of four local Financial Aid Saturdays is set for Saturday, Feb. 5, 8:30 a.m-12:30 p.m., at the Hays High School library. The event is designed to assist seniors–or any former graduate or current college student–in completing the Free Application for Federal  Students Aid (FAFSA) for the 2011-2012 school year. Volunteers from a number of agencies, as well as Spanish translators, will be available to assist. Seniors are advised to contact their high school counselors for information on items to bring and early registration.

Parents and students should bring a copy of their W-2 and income tax forms to complete the FAFSA. All Financial Aid Saturday services are free and open to all seniors, regardless of their campus. Future Financial Aid Saturdays are set for Saturday, Feb. 19, at Hays High, Saturday, Feb. 26, at Chapa Middle School, and Saturday, March 5, at Lehman High School.

For early registration or for more information, see the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce website at www.collegereadyaustin.com.
