This colossal beaut greeted us when we walked into It’s New To Me on RR12. The original $4,900 price tag slashed in half, this gift will tickle the music lover on your list.

From trolls to massive metal Mexican frog musicians to a stealth Big Foot sculpture, the gardens at Sol’stice in Dripping Springs amazed us at every turn.

It’s officially here. Day 1 of Christmas Season 2010. It’s that peculiar time of year met by feelings of anticipation, consternation or trepidation, depending on the audience. And although it may seem like Christmas morning is a long way away, don’t blink. This is one of those holidays that seems to sneak up on you. And, if you need a little more impetus: the children only have twelve more days of school before the winter break.

It’s time to reckon with the inevitable: Santa’s not the only one who needs to make a list and check it twice. Take a look at your work environment, neighbor relations and family traditions and determine which folks you are going to need to buy a gift for this holiday season. Then, vow to make this the year that you avoid the malls and massive chain stores and get creative with your gift-giving. Think past the cartoon coffee mug, yawn-inspiring neckties and rubber-soled slippers and on to something totally unique.

Luckily for us this area is teeming with independently owned shops, galleries, boutiques and bakeries featuring eclectic and one-of-a-kind gifts for even the hardest person to buy for on your Christmas list. So, to pique your imagination, we took the backroads and city center streets to bring you a sampling of what small town downtowns and rural roadside shops throughout Hays County have to offer.

Check out the December edition of All Around Hays “Buy Local Guide”, for even more gift ideas and then take an afternoon, roll down the windows and discover some of these incredible independently-owned shops. By shopping locally, you support your friends and neighbors as well as your community with the added bonus of giving a gift that is sure to be absolutely unforgettable.
