Mountain City Montage
by PAULINE TOM
I must go back and collect some more coyote hair. RonTom and I came across a carcass near HEB Plus, and visions of bird nests danced in my head. Kiss’Me and BoD noticed right away, when I hung a wire basket stuffed with the hair in our backyard.
Chickadees and titmice found it in less than two days, even though it’s not quite yet nesting season.
Usually for nesting season, I put out cotton, human hair (short lengths), leaves, twigs, and cotton (no polyester) drier lint.
Once a Rufous Hummingbird finally showed up at a feeder on a freezing day, we’ve seen at least one each day.
A Rufous found his way into our garage last week. I hung three feeders near the exit at high points, and within an hour he found his way out.
We’ve seen some hawks and a Black Vulture in our backyard.
A squirrel tried to carry away a butterfly net stored on my back deck.

Collecting items for PAWS is the next calendared activity of Loving Mountain City. Nancy Waddell says, “Just pick up something for the pet shelter each time you go to the grocery store.”

What’s new with the City? Notice appears on the website (www.mountaincitytx.com) of the 3 open positions for city council (alderman) for the May election. Applications are available from City Secretary, Ellis Craig, 268-1239. Feb. 12 is the first day to file for a place on the ballot; March 14 is the last day to file for place on the ballot.

What’s new with me? A Skype-in telephone number. Before Skype-in, when I used Skype to phone out, I showed up as California or Colorado or something more weird to folks with caller ID. It rings in on my computer.
What else is new? You tell me, please. I’m collecting tidbits! 512-268-5678 OR 512-212-1314 or [email protected]
