Kyle picks new city manager

Final zoning hearing set

The Hays CISD Growth Impact Committee holds its final public hearing just prior to the January Board of Trustees meeting next Monday, Jan. 24. The committee is considering modifications of the attendance zones at Hemphill Elementary and Camino Real Elementary. The proposed modifications include moving approximately 71 students, residing east and south of Highway 21, from Hemphill Elementary to Camino Real Elementary. The idea is to provide Hemphill relief on next year’s student-to-teacher ratio.

Kyle winter fete Thursday

Kyle Elementary School hosts its Winter Literacy Night tomorrow, Thursday, Jan. 20, at 6 p.m. The evening opens with a Frito pie dinner and meeting in the cafeteria, then organizers promise “great stories and winter activities!” All KES students, their families, and staff are invited. Participants will rotate to a variety of areas to listen to great literature, take part in activities and select books to take home to read. For more information, contact Jill Aylor at 268-1417.

Hawks get Houston gifts

Almost fifty Hemphill Hawks received new clothing, shoes, toys and bikes (and accompanying helmets) for Christmas through the generosity of Houston donors and the involvement of the Texas Children’s Hospital. Hemphill teacher Katie Upton was responsible for the connection with the donors, prompting her principal, Paige Collier, to note, “Her generosity and initiative made many, many children happy!”

Hairspray tickets on sale

Advance tickets are now on sale for Hairspray, this year’s district musical at the Performing Arts Center. Performances will be Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 3-5, at 7 p.m. with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday as well, Feb. 5. All tickets are $10, but a half-price ticket special is being offered to students and staff for the Thursday evening performance. To reserve seats, call PAC Office Manager Donna Andrade at 268-8443. Cash, checks, Mastercard and VISA are being accepted.

Memorial avenue offered

Students and staff at Hemphill Elementary School are saddened by the sudden death of fourth-grader Fabiola Pina Guzman, from complications of a severe asthma attack. Plans are for a memorial tree-planting at the campus and details on that ceremony are forthcoming. An account for those wishing to help the family with medical and funeral expenses has been established at all Wells Fargo branches, the designation being “donation account for Fabiola Pina Guzman.”
