STAFF REPORT
A bat found near the public library and pavilion in Old Town Buda tested positive for rabies according to results received today from the Texas Department of State Health Services.
The dead bat was found about 4 p.m. Tuesday in the 100 block of Main Street, said Buda animal control officer Jennifer Bannach.
Rabies is always present in a small percentage in the bat population, health officials say. Less than one percent of the Austin megacolony is estimated to carry rabies, Bannach said, which portends a low infection rate. In June, a rabid bat was found in the Whispering Hollow and Clear Springs neighborhood.
No one is known to have come into contact with the bat, Bannach said, but anyone who did should contact Animal Control at 512-312-2876.
