Columbus Day Holiday Monday
All Hays CISD students will enjoy a holiday next Monday, Oct. 11, in observance of Columbus Day. Parents of all district elementary students are encouraged to make an appointment for a parent-teacher conference. Classes will resume at normal times Tuesday.
Science Hall “Reads for the Record”
This Thursday, Oct. 7, students and adults at Science Hall Elementary will participate in the global “Read for the Record” program. Suns librarian Anne White reports it is “a campaign to bring adults and kids together to read the same book on the same day, in communities all over the world, with a goal to break the world record.” This year’s selection is “The Snowy Day” by Ezra Jack Yeats. www.readfortherecord.org.
Lobos host marching festival
The Lehman High School Band once again hosts the annual US Scholastic Band Association Central Texas Regional Marching Contest this Saturday, Oct. 9, at Shelton Stadium. At last count, Lobo Band Director Joey Lucita reported 23 bands, including the Lobos and Hays High Rebels, are scheduled to participate. Lucita notes the need for local volunteers to help at the meet and to do so, contact Lehman High at 268-8454 and ask for the band hall.
Hornet Noche de Familia next week
Tom Green Elementary hosts its ever-popular Noche de Familia celebration Thursday, Oct. 14, from 6-7:30 p.m. District bilingual dyslexia teacher Nilda Nava says the event is “to observe National Hispanic Cultural Awareness Month and to celebrate our diverse community in this school.” Door prizes will be part of the evening, which includes a dinner entrée (free to Tom Green families), with families bringing covered dish sides. “This is an opportunity for teachers to sit down and eat a meal and enjoy fellowship with their students’ families,” Nava said.
Blanco Vista pet clinic set
Blanco Vista Elementary School hosts a fund-raising pet vaccination clinic at the Hays CISD Central Office Thursday, Oct. 14, from 5-7 p.m. Dr. John Y. Tarlton will be offering a full range of individual vaccines for nominal fees, as well as a complete yearly package for $20. Flea and heartworm prevention will also be available.
