SPECIAL TO THE HAYS FREE PRESS

Doug Moreland – a singer, songwriter and woodcarver – visited Lehman High School recently. Moreland addressed one of Ken Bradfield’s senior English classes and spoke on the relationship between song lyrics and poetry.

Moreland began his talk with his own short history, then spoke about how his songwriting has evolved and the poetic devices he uses to build lyrics. He told the students that his musical inspirations come to him throughout the day. To compile and remember his insights he uses an iPhone as a recording device.

After performing a number of his songs, Moreland answered questions about his motivation and reasons for composition. He said he is an avid reader of history and that much of his insight comes from his reading.

An accomplished woodcarver, Moreland brought a sample of his craft, a beautiful 24-inch armadillo that was intricately carved in a short amount of time with a chainsaw.
