No school next Monday

Students and staff of the Hays CISD will observe the Martin Luther King Day holiday next Monday, Jan.  17. Classes will resume and offices re-open Tuesday, Jan. 18, at regular times.

Growth Impact Hearings set

The Hays CISD Growth Impact Committee holds its final two public hearings as it continues to look at attendance zones at Hemphill Elementary and Camino Real Elementary. A hearing is set for this Thursday, Jan. 13, 6 p.m. at Hemphill and another is set just prior to the Jan. 24 Board of Trustees meeting. The proposed modifications include moving approximately 71 students, residing east and south of Highway 21, from Hemphill to Camino Real. The idea is to provide Hemphill relief on next year’s student-to-teacher ratio.

Hairspray tickets on sale

Advance tickets are now on sale for Hairspray, this year’s district musical at the Performing Arts Center, set for Feb. 3-4 at 7 p.m. with a 2 p.m. matinee Feb. 5. All tickets are $10, but a half-price ticket special is being offered to students and staff for the Thursday evening performance. To reserve seats, call PAC Office Manager Donna Andrade at 268-8443. Cash, checks, Mastercard and VISA are being accepted.

Stopping Cyberbullying

The first of two workshops on cyberbullying is being offered Thursday, Jan. 27, 6:30 p.m. at Simon Middle School. “Youth and Cyberbullying; What Families Don’t Know Will Hurt Them,” is being offered to increase understanding and awareness of the problem, offer parents strategies to discuss and respond to their children’s experiences with cyberbullying, and to offer adults ways to help their children ally with others experiencing the abuse. Due to subject matter, the workshop is not suitable for children younger than 11. Middle school and high school students are welcome. The workshop is free. A second workshop is scheduled for March 1 at Carpenter Hill Elementary.
