HEB employees in Hays County have pledged $164,000 to the United Way of Hays County campaign, part of more than $1 million raised by the grocery store chain’s associates in Central Texas.
United Way hosted its annual “Thanks A Million” event on Tuesday, putting guest baggers and greeters in stores across the region.
“We like to say we’re in the business of growing philanthropists through our workplace campaigns. This is an encouraging way to start our campaign and raise the [funds] needed to move us forward in continuing our efforts to create community change and improve the lives of those in need,” said Michelle Harper, the United Way of Hays County executive director.
United Way of Hays County’s fundraising goal this year is $350,000, Harper said.
Thousands of HEB employees from 54 stores have pledged to give $1,029,974.02, a nearly 25 percent increase over 2009. Said HEB General Manager Jeff Thomas, “I’m humbled and proud of the continued generosity of our H-E-B Partners (employees) through these challenging economic times. They work hard to take care of the needs of our customers both inside our stores, and outside in the community.”
