As the afternoon sun sinks slowly in the west, and at a later hour these past few weeks, we start to think of spring in Central Texas. If we were up north, it would be April or May, not late February.
Here in Texas we are outside looking in the yard for signs of spring. Is the grass greening up? Are there buds on any of the plants? I did see some Rosemary blooms over the weekend. Can I plant my early flowers without the fear of a frost that will banish them to the trash pile? Is it too early for tomatoes? The other day I heard of a fellow in Buda that already has 150 tomato plants in the hothouse just waiting for the time to plant them in the garden.
I think talking about the coming of spring helps us think more about fun things and not as much about the not so fun things.
Thinking about fun things, are you all aware that it is only 60 days until the coming of the 2009 Buda Lions Club Country Fair, BBQ, and Chili Cook-Off and the 11th Annual Wiener Dog Races? Mark you calendars for Saturday and Sunday, April 25 and 26, 2009 so that you can participate in the biggest event of the year in Buda.
There will be parades, the famous Oscar Meyer Wienermobile brought to you by the Buda Area Chamber of Commerce and HEB, arts and crafts booths, food booths of all types, including the famous Buda Chamber Hot Dog booth, all manner of wiener dog memorabilia, entertainment, exciting wiener dog races and of course the opportunity to taste test some of the best BBQ and chile that has ever crossed your lips. I have been told that there will be over 60 BBQ/chile cookers on the grounds competing for $3,500. In guaranteed prize money. There will also be a big fireworks display on Saturday night.
