I read with interest your two-page Education spread in the April 22 issue of your paper about the many accomplishments of the Hays County teens and pre-teens. These young adults are shown participating in school plays, visiting foreign lands, winning awards, performing in Washington, D.C., academic, vocational and community service achievements and involvement - the list goes on and on.
Kudos to the adults in the Hays community who support youth in these endeavors, and kudos to you, the Hays Free Press, for providing a forum that highlights and praises those achievements. The Travis County Underage Drinking Prevention Program (serving Travis, Hays and Williamson counties) addresses the issues of underage drinking and anti-DWI. Research shows that one of the strongest indicators of alcohol-use and abuse is youth with a combination of too much free time and too little supervision. Thanks to the Hays community, especially educators, parents and press, for doing more than your share to help provide youth with positive alternatives to underage drinking.
