Odds & Ends - June 11, 2008

Installation for the Uhland Mayor Albert Busse and aldermen Gordon Sassman and Glen Smith, was held Wednesday, June 4 at the Uhland Community Center.


All who attended were asked to partake of a bountiful spread of chips, dips, cheeses, sausage and too many desserts to mention.

Awards of appreciation were given to the following for voluntary work and contributions to the city: Jim Roach, who was the first Fire Chief of the Uhland Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the department for many years; Chuck Holt, who served as Fire Chief for many years and fought many fires until ill health forced his resignation (Ruth Holt accepted his award).


Daniel Heideman served as secretary/treasurer for the fire department, Mayor Pro-tem and Mayor of the city of Uhland, treasurer of the Old Spanish Days, etc.; Raymond Heideman, who was the president of the Uhland Volunteer Fire Department, chairman of the parade committee; Doug Schnautz member of the fire department, also active in Old Spanish Days; William Ilse, member of the fire department and instrumental in the planning and implementing Old Spanish Trail Days.


Not able to attend were: Gregg Roach who served as Fire Chief for a while and fire fighter; also Rick Kleen, who was a member of the fire department and president; Rick Tobias, a member of the fire department.


Others receiving awards for community service were: Janet Sassman, who takes care of the renting and maintance of the community center and grounds; Sharon Heideman, who spent many hours in the renovation, caring and renting of the community center.


Myrtle Heideman, who spent many hours gathering information and pictures of the improvements in the community for the scrapbooks for the progress program, in which Uhland won several awards and worked with the Old Spanish Trail events.


Diana Woods, who was the city administrator, for a job well done and going beyond the call of duty. Corry Moore for developing a website for the city of Uhland.


Thanks to all who helped in the event. It was announced that another awards event is planned to include those who were overlooked.

The Uhland City Council authorized Rick Tobias to attend the youth workshop to be held in Austin on Monday, June 8 at city expense. The Texas Municipal League sponsors the youth workshop. Mayors and interested citizens from all over the nation are expected to attend.

Last call to reserve a space for the arts and crafts booth and/or enter a car/truck in the car show to be held at the St. John United Church on Saturday, June 14 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Breakfast tacos and coffee will be available from 8 until 10 a.m. Barbecue plates will be sold from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.


There will be door prizes, raffle and bake sale from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Speaking of food, Myrtle Heideman spent her birthday in Guadalajara. Joining her in good food and fun were Raymond Heideman, Herbert and Pauline Schwertfeger, Daniel, Sharon and Clarence Heideman. Oh, by the way that was in Guadalajara Restaurant in Lockhart.


Coming to wish "mom" a happy birthday in the afternoon was Terry Kleen, Logan Crowell and Jessica Reyes.

David and Victoria Avalos renewed their wedding vows in St. John United Church on Saturday, June 7. After the beautiful service all were invited to the reception in Cuauhtemoc Hall in San Marcos, in honor of their 31st wedding anniversary.


Happy birthday to Ed Daughtery, Bob and Karen Schllortt on June 19; David Batilla, June 23; Samantha Avalos, June 24 and Charlie Orn, June 26.
