Following Hays CISD board member Willie Tenorio’s resignation, the board will have new representation for Single Member District (SMD) 2 until the next election in May 2022.
During a special meeting on Dec. 2, the board unanimously voted to appoint Dr. Esmeralda Pérez-González as the new SMD 2 trustee, replacing Tenorio.
Tenorio moved outside of SMD 2, and, per the Texas Education Code, a trustee that ceases to reside in the district they represent must vacate the office. Filling the vacancy will allow SMD 2 to have representation on the board until a citizen can be elected to serve a full term.
Tenorio has served on the board since 2009, including as board vice president from 2011 to 2012 and president from 2012 to 2014.
Pérez-González is a former bilingual educator of 38 years and is a National Board Certified Teacher. She was also part of the founding faculty and staff at Camino Real Elementary and was selected as its first teacher of the year in 2009.
“I’m humbled and excited and a little nervous,” Pérez-González said. “I’m looking forward to working with each school board member, parents, schools and school communities to ensure that our teachers and students have a successful rest of the school year, amid the unusual circumstances we’re in today.”
