Residents invited to provide feedback
BUDA — Big things are happening in Buda to address and keep up with its growth, including the potential implementation of local fixed-route and on-demand transit options that are currently nonexistent.
According to Buda Assistant City Manager Wendy L. Smith, the city has partnered with the Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority, or CapMetro, to develop a three-year Transit Development Plan (TDP) for the city. This plan is expected to be complete in September 2023.
While Buda falls outside of CapMetro’s service area, the city is participating in its regional Service Extension Program. The program funds jurisdictions outside of its service area — but in order to utilize those funds, the city must first complete the TDP.
Smith said that this partnership will provide “practical guidance to the city to facilitate future transit service decisions” moving forward.
“The Buda City Council approved an interlocal agreement with CapMetro to identify transit needs, analyze service options and financing and provide recommendations for transportation services,” Smith explained. “The TDP explores safe, reliable, efficient and accessible transportation options for residents of, and visitors to, the city of Buda regardless of socioeconomic status or disability.”
Public engagement and feedback is essential to understanding and addressing the mobility needs of residents, Smith said. As such, the city, alongside CapMetro, will host a “virtual open house” from April 13-27 for residents to share their input and vision for the future of transit in Buda. While Buda has its STAR Senior Transportation Service and rideshare apps like Lyft and Uber are available in the area, having more localized and stable transit options will be crucial as Buda grows.
“As evidenced by the 2021 bond election, mobility is a high priority for the city council and residents alike,” Smith said. “We continually evaluate options for improving access to activity centers including employment, healthcare, shopping and recreation.”
