The Kyle Garden Club (KGC) has drawn inspiration from music about flowers to host its first flower show, "Garden Melodies," in two decades on Saturday, May 13.

“Garden Melodies” will be held from 1-4 p.m. in the Family Life Center of the Kyle United Methodist Church and is open to the public.

Kyle Garden Club Vice President Glenda Conley began doing her homework on flower shows with KGC President Ginna Grimes when they attended meetings and spoke to other garden clubs that host flower shows regularly.

“They just inspired us to give it a try here,” Conley said.

Conley moved to this area from Florida in August 2020 and found that it was difficult to meet people in the middle of a pandemic. She had been a part of a garden club in Florida and knew that it was something she enjoyed doing, so she reached out to the garden club state representative who was able to get her involved with the KGC.

“The club was not having regular monthly meetings because of the pandemic. But there were some gatherings and activities and they invited me to come and I joined up right away,” Conley said. “I jumped right in. I served as publicity chairman, got the Facebook page started and then volunteered to be the vice president of the club for this year.”

During the garden club meetings, Conley was the one to suggest the idea of the flower show and since she suggested it, she thought it was only fair that she volunteers to become the chair of the flower show.

“So, that then added another responsibility for me. And so, I'm the chair of the flower show committee for this year,” Conley said.

When deciding on a theme for this flower show, the KGC noticed that throughout music, there is a notable mention of flowers and the happiness that they bring, therefore, the “Garden Melodies” theme came to fruition.

“We just brainstormed ideas of things that we thought could give us a focus for the flower show,” Conley said. “So many songs focus on flowers or the good feelings that flowers give us.”

The flower show will include displays of floral arrangements, cut flowers and container-grown plants. Contestants will have to submit their flower show entries by May 2. The entries will be judged by accredited judges and ribbons will be awarded to the top exhibitors.

“The judging will take place Saturday morning. We have these accredited judges who know so much about flowers and they've been to flower show school. They'll come in and decide which entries deserve award ribbons, blue ribbons, red ribbons, yellow ribbons, white ribbons,” Conley said. “There are what I call medallion ribbons, or the best in certain categories, that kind of thing. And then we'll also have the People's Choice Award. So, when visitors come to the flower show, they'll be given a ballot and can walk around and vote for some of the entries they liked best.”

Admission will be free and raffle tickets will be offered for the silent auction.
