DRIPPING SPRINGS — Sundays are for cozying up on the couch with a good book that will keep you reading from beginning to end. That’s exactly what Dixie Frechette had in mind when she opened Sunday Bookshop in Dripping Springs.
“I love Sunday so much. Sundays to me are always spent at home, cozy on the couch with my dogs and reading a book or doing whatever relaxing thing I like to do. When designing the store, I wanted it to feel like that,” said the Dripping Springs native. “I really tried to make it feel like you were in your living room. There are cozy couches and chairs, and a lot of dark wood and wallpaper, just to kind of make it a very cozy and comfortable space.”

Frechette has been working to get Sunday Bookshop off the ground since the beginning of the year; she opened the bookstore after closing her women’s clothing and home decor boutique called Fresh Native in January.
“I've always been such a book nerd. I've loved reading ever since I was a little kid. I've always just kind of had that in the back of my head that something I would love to do is open a bookstore,” she said. “When I travel, I always try to find the local bookstore to go in and spend some time in there. One of my favorite places to be is a small bookstore. I've always loved reading [and] I love talking to people about reading and books. It's so fun to me, so this is kind of putting it all together in one place.”
As this is not her first time owning a business, Frechette prides herself in continuing to support and be a role model for other women in the community. She has even shown her love for what women can do by showcasing specific authors.
“I love being able to be creative and express myself through the store. With the old boutique, I had it with my mom and my sister so it was really fun to have three women working together and putting all of our creativity together to see what happened. I love doing this one by myself, I really try to make it very me,” Frechette said of being a woman business owner. “I'm feeling very supported. I think it's really cool how women are making such cool things these days and really being able to do that … People over the weekend noticed in the store that I have carried primarily women authors and that wasn't an intention. I think I gravitate toward them and I like their storytelling better. Personally, I think they just stick out to me more and so I think that's kind of cool, too, that unintentionally, I have a ton of women authors in there. I think that's a nice addition to the store.”
Currently, Sunday Bookshop is the only independently-owned bookstore in Dripping Springs and Frechette said the support from the community has been “unreal.”
“I had no idea what to expect because it is so different from what I did before. I have been blown away by the support. It is so surreal to me how kind everyone's been and how excited they are,” she said. “So many people have said, ‘This is what the town needed.’ It's just so nice and sweet to hear.”
Those interested in browsing Sunday Bookshop’s shelves and picking up their next read can visit 28101 Ranch Road 12 in Dripping Springs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. For more information, visit .
