BUDA — Buda Oaks Assisted Living and Memory Care completed its month-long fan drive — a donation project where fans will be gifted to older adults in need — on July 1.

“We recognized that the summer months can be particularly challenging for vulnerable individuals, as they often face the risk of heat-related illnesses. This motivated us to start our fan drive in support of Family Eldercare,” said Director of Public Relations and Brand Assurance Blair Burney. “By providing fans, we aimed to offer relief and support to those in need, ensuring they stay cool and safe during the hottest time of the year.”

Thanks to community participation, Buda Oaks was able to collect 40 fans. Though this was below its original goal of 250, staff members are still incredibly grateful to those who donated fans and are challenged to top their total next year, explained Burney.

The fans collected are to be distributed to those in need through Family Eldercare, an organization dedicated to developing resources and training for both families and older adults. Family Eldercare has a process that helps determine which families will receive a fan based on the lack of proper cooling or financial challenges.

Residents at Buda Oaks were ecstatic to provide a fan to those who need it most during the hottest months of the year.

“The response from the seniors at Buda Oaks was overwhelmingly positive! Our residents, families and friends who donated were happy to bring relief to those who need it and help others stay cool in the hottest months,” Burney said. “They may not be able to see the smiling faces of the people they are helping, but they are happy to be making a positive impact on the community.”

Extreme heat is a big concern for older adults, and families should take precautions when caring for their loved ones. Burney explained that through organizations such as Family Eldercare, families can feel a sense of relief from some of the struggles they face.

“For us at Buda Oaks Assisted Living and Memory Care, it is an honor and a privilege to support our neighbors by providing fans. Our residents recognize the importance of coming together to uplift one another,” said Burney. “It's a meaningful way for us to demonstrate our commitment to caring for our community members, especially the elderly, who may be more vulnerable to the effects of high temperatures … We express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who participated in the fan drive, as their kindness and generosity made a significant impact on the lives of our neighbors!”
