JOHNSON CITY — Pedernales Electric Cooperative (PEC) is now accepting applications for community grants and encourages nonprofits within or surrounding PEC’s service area to apply for up to $5,000. The deadline is 11:59 p.m. on Oct. 2.

According to a news release, PEC awards grants twice a year and nonprofits that receive them can use funds to support projects related to technology, capital improvements and energy efficiency. The most recent grants provided $33,000 to local nonprofits and since 2016, PEC has provided more than $363,000 in funding to more than 87 organizations.

“Together with our members, we’re proud to power important projects that Texas Hill Country nonprofits are working on to better our communities,” PEC Community Relations Manager Celeste Mikeska stated.

“By enrolling in our Power of Change program to round their bills to the nearest dollar, our members are making a profound impact by supporting important initiative to help a variety of local cause.”

Recent recipient Wimberley Institute of Cultures recognizes and preserves the archeological history and cultural resources of the Wimberley Valley. It also provides educational programs and social activities to all community members.

“We want to thank PEC for these grants that will help us to install our rainwater catchment system,” said board member Debra Billups. “We could not have moved forward so quickly with this project if it hadn’t been for the funding.”

Grants are funded exclusively by PEC members through the Power of Change program. Signing up is easy and allows PEC members to support nonprofits in the community. The average donation is approximately $6 per year. For more information about the Power of Change program, visit pec.coop/change. Nonprofits can submit an application for a PEC grant by visiting pec.coop/grants.
