Each year, American Farmland Trust holds a Farmers Market celebration to raise awareness of the “vital role farmers markets play across the country.” The summer-long event includes a vote for the best market in each state, in regions, and in the nation.
This year’s event started in June and is coming to a close on September 18th. Dripping Springs Farmers Market is currently maintaining a lead in Texas and the Southwest region.
“We made a strong push early to get votes, giving away market bags from the Texas Department of Agriculture, stickers from GoTexan and any other pieces of swag we could get our hands on,” said Charlie Reed, market manager. “This gave us a big lead out of the gate, but the last week of this marathon is always a mad dash, and we’ll need a lot more support to hold on.”
“Farmers markets are integral, not just for access to local produce and meats that are healthier and more flavorful, but as living laboratories for aspiring small businesses owners to get their starts,” Reed added. “This vote is a great way to promote the value of markets and to remind folks that supporting their neighbors really means supporting communities and helping them grow.”
