Wimberley High School Speech and Debate Team kicks off season

Staff Report WIMBERLEY — The Wimberley High School Speech and Debate Team traveled to La Vernia for the East Central Hornet Hijinks and the La Vernia Bear Brawl Tournaments on Sept. 8 and 9. The two competitions were the first two tournaments of the season for WHS.

WIMBERLEY — The Wimberley High School Speech and Debate Team traveled to La Vernia for the East Central Hornet Hijinks and the La Vernia Bear Brawl Tournaments on Sept. 8 and 9. The two competitions were the first two tournaments of the season for WHS.

The following students placed at the East Central Hornet Hijinks Tournament on Sept. 8:

• Kathryn Kinser - Lincoln Douglas Debate - Quarterfinalist

• Faeryn Frueh - Novice Extemp - 1st

• Gage Trudeau - Informative Speaking - 3rd

• Gage Trudeau - Foreign Extemp - Semifinalist

• Josh Bober and Kathryn McKinney - CX Debate 1st

The following students placed at the La Vernia Bear Brawl on Sept. 9:

• Josh Bober and Kathryn McKinney - CX Debate - 1st

• Chloe Swindle - Poetry - 6th

• Eden Kruse - Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate - 1st

• Faeryn Frueh - Novice Extemp - 3rd

• Ella Fertitta - Lincoln Douglas Debate - 3rd

• Gage Trudeau - Informative Speaking- Semifinalist

• Faeryn Frueh - Informative Speaking- Semifinalist

• Gage Trudeau - Foreign Extemp- Semifinalist

Debate Speaker Awards at Bear Brawl are listed below:

• CX Debate - Josh Bober 1st, Kathryn McKinney-2nd

• LD Debate - Ella Fertitta- 4th

• Novice LD - Eden Kruse- 2nd

The cross examination team of Bober and McKinney, which placed sixth at last year's UIL State meet in the same event, has already qualified for the Texas Forensics Association (TFA) State meet as a result of the two first place finishes. Competitors who advance to the top six at a regular season tournament receive points based off of their placings.

Once students have 10 points, they qualify for TFA State. The duo of Bober/McKinney has accrued 12 points after only two tournaments.
