Dear Editor:
As a longtime resident, I know Central Texas offers something for everyone. Whether you want to make an escape for the water, go on an adventurous hike or try the newest brewery, there is no shortage of year-round activities that fill bucket lists. Live music is, of course, a staple of many of those lists—and rightfully so.
Some of the world’s most renowned artists have played here. For the last 50 years, I have seen these artists play at venues throughout Austin, including—my favorite—The Continental Club.
Live entertainment venues have been integral to Austin’s growth. They have shown a spotlight on the city that has ushered in businesses and people from around the world to create a vibrant entertainment ecosystem.
Living southwest of the city near Fitzhugh Road, I enjoy a quiet escape. I get to experience the beauty of the Texas Hill Country in a more peaceful environment, while being just a short drive away from the city. It’s truly the best of both worlds.
However, this same development that has grown our region—our home—is now threatening to harm my community. I have been closely following the developments of Blizexas LLC and their efforts to build a 5,000-seat outdoor concert venue. It is disturbing to think this is the appropriate place for that. Traffic and safety concerns, which are already an issue on the narrow and windy Fitzhugh Road, will only be exacerbated. Additionally, there is the potential for wastewater to pollute Barton Creek.
I was grateful to learn that I have support. I, along with thousands of others, have joined the Stop Fitzhugh Concert Venue coalition and signed a petition to ask the Hays County Commissioners Court to require the out-of-state developers to produce a Road Safety Audit and revise their Traffic Impact Analysis to more adequately meet the needs of our community.
I urge you to join us—if you haven’t already. This simply isn’t a safe or reasonable location for a concert venue. It is imperative that we be smart with development to ensure a healthy and thriving future.
