Their run-through banner promised a show Friday and the Johnson Jaguars more than delivered.
Success across every phase of the game was the cat’s meow for the Jaguars (5-0, 2-0) as they swept aside district rival Lehman 52-19.
That being said, securing the victory definitely was no cake walk for the Jags as the Lobos’ (1-4, 0-2) bite was effective at the start.
Big plays kept Lehman in contention early, with the Jags clinging to a 14-13 lead after a quarter thanks to a 71-yard touchdown strike from quarterback Collin Richardson to wide receiver Tanner Johnson. Johnson finished the game with two touchdown catches in the contest.
But 31 unanswered Jaguar points scored in the second and third quarters effectively took the wind out of Lehman’s sails and pushed Johnson ahead 45-13.
Central to Johnson’s success was quarterback Jesse Medina who threw for 186 yards in the game and two touchdowns with one interception. The Jag ground game equally thrived with running back Devon Blackwell rushing for 55 yards and two touchdowns in the contest and Medina rushing for 38 yards.
Special teams were, well, special for the Jaguars. Johnson’s Richard Kelly provided a highlight-reel 91-yard kickoff return and Aiden Rodriguez provided a punt return for a touchdown.
Johnson is off this week with a bye and returns to action Oct. 8 when the Jags travel to play at San Antonio Veterans Memorial at Rutledge Stadium. The Lobos, also with a bye this week, host district-leading Dripping Springs Thursday, Oct. 7 at 7:30 p.m. at Bob Shelton Stadium.
