BUDA — Following an extensive search, Buda City Manager Micah Grau appointed Matthew Wright as director of Human Resources. Wright will assume his new role with Buda on Nov. 27.
“We are eager to have Matthew bring his unique perspective to our team,” Grau said, adding, “He’s had a successful career in law enforcement, including having led a division that is responsible for conducting internal investigations. He also performed many Human Resources-related functions, such as risk management, policy developments, employee training and processing Family Medical Leave Act and Americans with Disability Act claims.”
Wright, who is retiring as a lieutenant in the Internal Affairs Unit of the Austin Police Department, has varied experiences that have prepared him for the role of Human Resources director.
Wright previously worked as a trainer at the Austin Police Academy, a police detective and a patrol officer. While serving in the Internal Affairs Unit, Wright was responsible for working with Human Resources to conduct internal investigations, write and review internal policies and ensure departmental compliance with federal labor laws.
Wright earned his master’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from Texas State University with a focus on organization, workforce and leadership studies. He also obtained Public Manager certification from Texas State University.
Additionally, Wright has served the community as a volunteer on the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission and Main Street Advisory Board.
“As a former member of Buda’s Planning and Zoning Commission and having worked in law enforcement for a municipality, I am no stranger to public service and look forward to joining the talented staff at the city of Buda,” Wright said. “I already know that Buda’s staff is dedicated to this community and I am so honored to be able to serve alongside them.”
Wright assumes the role following the retirement of current HR Director Vicki Fuchs later this year, who has served in the role since 2017.
