WIMBERLEY  — After a 8-4 loss to Steele and a 7-7 tie against Floresville on Thursday, the Wimberley Texans baseball team played its third game of the Texan Classic tournament on Friday, March 8.

Wimberley held a 4-0 lead over Godley in the top of the seventh inning and starting pitcher Finn Mignerey needed one out to pitch a complete game shut-out. Chase Carson came in relief with runners at first and third base when head coach Stephen Wisdom had to take Mignerey out of the game due to the pitch count rule.

The UIL set the limit to 110 pitches, but a pitcher can finish with the batter at the plate.

“I knew I’d reached the limit and saw coach coming,” Mignerey, who pitched 7.2 innings, said after the game. “I didn’t want to come out and could have finished the game, but that’s the rule.”

Earlier in the game, with a 1-0 lead, the Texans put two more runs across the plate in the second inning. Kyler Lai reached on a base hit and a sacrifice bunt by Owen O’Neal moved him to second base. An overthrow after a base hit by Wyatt Yeatter scored Lai and Yeatter advanced to second base. Dade Gusoskey grounded out, but Yeatter moved to third and scored on a Bryson Young single. Michael Brister hit a fly ball to deep center field ending the inning.

The Texans scored with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning when Young singled, stole second base and Zach Patek drove Young in to score with a single.

After the replacement of the pitcher, the Wildcats scored on a wild pitch, but the threat was ended when Carson induced a pop fly for the final out and a 4-1 win.

“We lost some close games to 6A teams and we’ve got some things to figure out, but the sky is the limit with this team,” Wisdom said.

The Texans will host Canyon Lake at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19 at Wimberley ISD Sports Complex.
