HAYS COUNTY — Democratic candidates Jennifer M. Escobar and J.R. Mendoza have won ballet seats for their respective races in November, according to official polls.
The runoff election was held on May 28, following the primary election on March 5.
In the race for tax assessor-collector, Escobar garnered 1,483 votes (50.87%), while her opponent, Jessica Sanchez had 1,432 votes (49.13%).
According to her campaign website, Escobar has more than 20 years of experience with taxes and running offices.

“As a seasoned business owner, I am passionate about effective leadership. I believe a strong leader prioritizes the needs and concerns of the people they serve,” said Escobar. “I believe in a commitment to transparency and a government that operates with openness and clarity. Transparency is not just a buzzword for me; it’s a guiding principle that shapes every decision and action I make.”
In the Justice of the Peace, Precinct 2, Place 2 race, J.R. Mendoza earned 377 votes (58.27%), maintaining his position, which was previously appointed by the Hays County Commissioners Court. Amanda K. Calvert received 270 votes (41.73%).
Mendoza is a long-term resident of the county, according to his campaign site, with a bachelor’s degree in political science, 12 years of experience working for the state and 10 years in law enforcement.

“As a former law enforcement officer, I will work closely with the district to eliminate student fentanyl use, eliminate student THC usage at schools, reduce truancy and keep education dollar[s] in the district,” the J.P. said.
Both candidates will run unopposed in the uniform election.
