The Wimberley High School Lady Texans volleyball team is only one win away from playing for the UIL Class 4A Division 2 State title.
Wimberley beat the Navarro High School Panthers, a district rival the Lady Texans had already defeated twice in the regular season, 3-0 (25-16, 26-24, 25-14), to capture the Region IV Championship at Alamo Heights High School on Nov. 14.
At press time on Nov. 19, Wimberley (40-3) will face the Salado High School Eagles (40-7) who won Region III, in a state semifinal playoff game. The winner will play either Randall High School (29-12) the winner of Region I, or Aubrey High School (33-12) the winner of Region II, for the UIL 4A D2 State Championship at 4 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22, at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland.
In the match against Navarro, senior Laney Hennessee pounded the Panthers with 19 kills and has 480 on the season. Addison Parks added 10 kills and Cameron Thames had two. Skylar Mears, Lili Sandoval, Mariah Mccoy and Rhagen Masur each had a kill.
The Panthers showed some different looks offensively and Wimberley head coach Misty Fletcher-Remmers said the team made some moves they’ve tried at practice: “Our defense played extremely well. They gave it all they had and tried to touch everything. I’m very proud of our kids.”
Defensively, the team totaled four blocks, Masur led with 12 digs, followed by Addie Laney and Skyler Herring each with 10. Hennessee had seven digs, Carson Peoples had five, Sandoval three and Ashton Shipman one. The team totaled 45 service receptions with only four errors.
“Navarro was really smart tonight in how they were hitting the ball. Instead of hitting it down they went over, around and in between,” senior Addie Laney said after the win. “The second set was super close, but we put it together in the third set and showed them who we were. Now, on to play Salado.”
Wimberley won state championships in 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2006 and 2007 and were state finalists in 2010 and 2020.
