The Wimberley Texans held a 39-0 lead when starting quarterback Cody Stoever came out of the game in the third quarter last Friday night in the season opener against Canyon Lake High School. Junior Jackson Parker came in at quarterback and the Texans put 7 more points on the board for a 46-0 win in the non-district contest.
“It wasn’t as pretty as we wanted and we knew there were going to be mistakes,” head coach Doug Warren told the team after the game. “But we did what we had to do. This was a good win.” Both teams experienced turnovers in what seemed to be first game jitters. Parker and Stoever each had a pass picked off, but Wimberly held the advantage; Jace Cutrona picked off a pass and Connor Michael pulled off a hat trick by intercepting three of the Hawks' passes.
“It’s been a grind.
I spent this summer working on the craft and tonight it paid off,” Michael said.
Ty Thames and Noah Williams recovered Canyon Lake fumbles, with Thames’ recovery leading to a Texan touchdown.
In spite of completing 16 of 22 passes for 142 yards and a touchdown along with seven carries for 92 yards, including a 55-yard touchdown run, Stoever was less than pleased with his performance, but nonetheless proud of his teammates.
“We had our hiccups and share of miscues and, as a leader of this team, I need to clean a lot of stuff up. I know my role and I don’t think I played that like I should have, but I’m really proud of this team and the way we competed tonight,” Stoever said.
“We don’t have guys that quit when they don’t feel they get what they want. They just work harder and that’s what is so cool about this program. I love Connor Michael and it’s a good story. He was on [the junior varisty team] last year as a junior, but he kept his head down and he worked. The guy had three picks tonight and it was awesome to see him succeed.”
The Texans had 172 yards passing to six different receivers and 284 yards rushing.
