WIMBERLEY — After an interception on their first possession, the Wimberley High School Texans put 42 points on the board by halftime for a 42-0 lead over Salado High School on Friday, Oct. 11.
The Eagles failed to make a first down and punted.
Nolan Waida dropped the ball while fielding the punt, but picked it up and ran 76 yards for a touchdown, which started the Texans scoring. Maverick Jacobs scored on a 9-yard run for a 14-0 lead midway in the first quarter. Salado’s fake field goal attempt failed before the quarter ended and Cody Stoever, the Texans quarterback, scored on a 1-yard run early in the second quarter. The Eagles had little success in rushing (86 total yards) and were forced to punt on each possession, while the Texans scored on each of theirs.
Jace Morales caught a 33-yard pass for a touchdown and Jace Cutrona recovered an Eagles fumble that led to a 2-yard touchdown run by Stoever for a 35-0 lead.
Before the half ended, Stoever threw two consecutive passes to Bryson Anderson and the second was good for a 49-yard touchdown and a 42-0 lead.
Waida commented after the game about the dropped punt, stating, “I don’t usually drop punts, but it kind of fell through the bread basket. I just picked it up, looked to the right and nobody was there, so I took off and luckily, I made it.”
Stoever completed a 53-yard touchdown pass to Joshua Belanger before coming out of the game, with a 49-6 lead, and was replaced at quarterback by Jackson Parker late in the third quarter. Parker scored on a 1-yard run early in the final quarter and Bo Holman, who was good on all seven of his points after touchdown attempts, kicked a 38-yard field goal to top off the Texans' scoring.
Wimberley only punted one time in the fourth quarter. Salado had 14 points in the third and fourth quarter on two rushing scores and two passing scores.
Stover completed nine of 14 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 81 yards and two touchdowns. Parker was three for five with 33 yards passing. Morales led receivers with five receptions for 164 yards.
“This team can be special if everybody will improve just a little bit,” head coach Doug Warren told the team after the win. “Continue to get better each and every day is what we preach, no matter what your role is. We played really well, especially in the first half, but if we all get a little bit better, imagine how good we could be.”
The Texans (4-2 overall, 2-0 district) travel to Jarrell (5-2 overall, 2-1 district) on Oct. 18 before hosting Gonzales High School on Oct. 25. Start time is 7:30 p.m. for both games.
