VOLLEYBALL BRIEFS

VOLLEYBALL BRIEFS
PHOTO BY ALBERT SANCHEZ The Dripping Springs High School volleyball team poses for a photo on Nov. 4 after the Lady Tigers won their bi-district match over the Vista Ridge High School Rangers. However, the team's way to state this year was recently upended by a 3-1 loss against the San Antonio Harlan Hawks.

Dripping Springs season ends DRIPPING SPRINGS – For the second consecutive year, the hopes, dreams and expectations of another volleyball state championship for Dripping Springs— this year ranked fourth in state and recently ranked sixth in the nation — collided last Friday night in a Region IV Area playoff match with the San Antonio Harlan High School Hawks.

The impact of the 3-1 loss (25-15, 25-23 and 25-22) was likely heard not only throughout the state, but perhaps the nation, as well. Last year’s journey to state was upended by a 3-0 loss to the Hawks in the 6A Regional Finals. The Lady Tigers’ season ends as 6A Region IV District 26 Champions (12-0), Bi-District Champions and a 46-3 overall record. Junior Henley Anderson is on the Max Preps Player of the Year list, with 531 kills and 298 digs.

Wimberley moves on with playoff back-to-back shutouts SAN MARCOS– Senior Laney Hennessee rattled the gymnasium boards with 16 kills and the Lady Texans winning 3-0 over Manor New Tech High School (25-6, 25-2 and 25-1) in the bi-district playoff game at San Marcos High School on Nov. 4.

“It’s easy to lose mental focus, so I’m proud we were able to maintain it and keep our errors down,” head coach Misty Fletcher-Remmers said after the win.

Wimberley advanced and, on Nov. 7, in the area playoff game at Seguin High School, defeated Cuero High School, a familiar foe 3-0 (25-21, 25-13 and 25-20). “Teams are going to want to win as bad as we do, so we don’t take any team lightly,” senior libero Rhagen Masur said after defeating Manor New Tech and talking about facing Cuero. “We have to be disciplined and play at our highest level defensively in every game.” Carson Peoples and Skylar Herring combined for 17 assists, Masur had 13 digs and Hennessee had 16 kills in the win over Cuero.

At press time on Nov. 12, the Lady Texans (38-3) will face Sinton High School (2215) in the 4A Region IV Semifinals. A win there will pair Wimberley with district rival Navarro High School (31-15) or Sweeny High School (32-11) in the Region IV Finals with a date, time and place to be determined.
