New veterinary clinic opens in Buda

Small town Buda is receiving a new veterinary clinic, following the opening of Buda Veterinary Care on Dec. 10.

According to director of operations Rob Amoroso, he and his wife, Dr.

Sandra Ontiveros, first spotted the property, located at 835 Main St., Building 1, Buda, in 2018, but after a change in ownership, the property was no longer available. Years later, Amoroso was driving down Main Street and saw a brand-new “For Sale” sign in front of the property once more. The couple almost immediately closed on the property and broke ground in February 2024.

“I’ve been practicing veterinary medicine for [more than] 20 years now. I started in emergency medicine and then, I went to general practice. I just really enjoyed general practice and getting to know my clients and their pets and just growing with them. I liked emergency, but you didn’t get to bond with your clients as much,” said Ontiveros.

Prior to this clinic, Amoroso and Ontiveros owned a facility in Austin, but wanted to make the move to Buda after visiting and clicking with the community. “We just love the vibe of Buda. There’s a lot of really great energy. It also didn’t have any veterinarians in the area that we chose,” said Amoroso. “There’s not a lot of options locally; they have to travel north or south … So, we thought it was a good location to build.”

The companion animal hospital, meaning that they service cats and dogs, is specially built for the business, so amenities are present that others may not find at competing veterinary offices.

For example, there are separate dog and cat entrances to keep anxiety and fear low for felines, as well as an entrance to the “comfort room,” where animals are often euthanized.

Additionally, the practice is working to become fear free: “It means that we learn techniques to reduce stress, like better ways to hold [and] deal with anxious animals. The use of pheromones to help keep animals calm when they need to and all kinds of techniques to gently handle animals who are fearful, including not doing anything if they don’t want to. It’s all meant to reduce anxiety,” Amoroso explained.

Services offered include wellness exams, vaccinations, dental care, surgery, microchipping, spay and neuter, labs, pain management, senior wellness and more.

“Our experience [makes us stand out].

That’s the bottom line. You could throw an experienced doctor in a shack, but that’s still going to be a great doctor. So, the focus really is our experience,” the director said. “We were able to choose the very best.”

Buda Veterinary Care also offers early morning drop-offs for those that have other commitments during the day. The choice to add this comes with the business’ emphasis on client service. Appointments automatically begin at 40 minutes, which according to Amoroso, is on average double of other offices, to focus on education and ensuring clients do not feel rushed during their visit.

“We’re really excited to do business, plant our flag and become part of the town,” concluded Amoroso.
