City of Buda to host volunteer fair

BUDA — Looking to remedy the lack of volunteers for city boards and commissions, Buda City Clerk Alicia Ramirez began the Buda Volunteer Fair in 2023. Now, it’s preparing for its third annual event.

“It all started where one year I didn't feel I had enough recruits or enough individuals volunteering to serve on these boards and commissions,” said Ramirez. “So, we brainstormed. We thought, ‘Let's just do a volunteer fair, so we can have other agencies, not only Buda, [and] people can explore the different types of opportunities that they can volunteer in.’ That's where that was born.”

Described as “an expedition to explore various volunteer opportunities throughout the city of Buda and Hays County,” by Ramirez, the volunteer fair is a way to bring the members of the community together with groups that are seeking volunteers.

“People at the beginning of the year, they want to make a big impact on their community,” she continued. “They don't know where to go, who to contact. We put it in a one-stop-shop, so you can have, not only for the city of Buda, you have it for all the organization nonprofits within Hays County that we've recruited.”

With more than 20 different organizations signed up for the event, the fair covers various causes: “We have diverse opportunities, from environmental conservation, animal rescue to education, healthcare and a wide range of volunteer opportunities that match your skills and interest,” said Ramirez.

Groups such as the Hays County Food Bank, CASA of Central Texas and PALS of Central Texas are all looking for individuals to join them in making the community a better place for everyone.

“Volunteering is more than just giving your time,” Ramirez said. “It's about making a meaningful impact on the lives of others and the wellbeing of your community. Whether you're looking to gain new skills, meet new people or simply find a sense of purpose, volunteering offers countless benefits.”

These volunteer opportunities are for community members of all ages. Because, beginning in 2023, Hays CISD now requires students to complete 40 volunteer hours prior to graduation, this event can be a resource for those looking to fulfill their allotment.

For those unable to attend, there will be a brochure available with information about each of the organizations involved.

“[Participants] can attend informative workshops and talks from experienced volunteers [and] community leaders on topics, such as effective volunteering, the impact of community service and how to balance volunteering with their daily life, as well as networking,” said Ramirez. “They connect with other volunteers, share experiences and build a supportive network that will inspire and motivate you as the participant throughout your volunteering journey.”

“Bring your friends, family and colleagues and let's work together to create a positive change in our community,” concluded Ramirez.

The city of Buda Volunteer Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, in the Buda Municipal Complex lobby at 405 East Loop Street. To learn more about the volunteer fair, visit bit.ly/3WBh42D.
