Hat-trick plus two for 5-0 win for Lady Texans soccer

Hat-trick plus two for 5-0 win for Lady Texans soccer

CLARK Wimberley’s Dylan Watson (No. 8) launches the soccer ball into the net for the second of her three goals against Marble Falls in the team’s district opener last Friday night at Texan Stadium. Watson pulled off the hat-trick with her third goal with 24 seconds remaining in the game.

At the Feb. 7 Wimberley High School Lady Texans soccer game, a minute of silence was observed in memory of McKenzie Duggar, a student trainer and Wimberley High School sophomore, who died at a Driftwood residence Tuesday, Jan. 28. The Wimberley High School Lady Texans soccer season was dedicated to Duggar before the team opened up 4A District 26 play at home; the game ended with a 5-0 win over the Marble Falls High School Mustangs at Texan Stadium.

It was the seventh consecutive win for Lady Texans (12-1 overall; 1-0 district) and their 11th shutout. In 13 games, Wimberley has scored 60 goals, while only giving up two goals.

The Marble Falls (7-5-1 overall; 0-1 district) goalkeeper saved several shots on goal before freshman Abby Durkin put the Lady Texans up 1-0 at the 25:47 mark. Wimberley’s defense and goalkeeper Sydney Laney kept the Mustangs out of the net and the 1-0 score remained at halftime.

Wimberley looked to be a more spirited team to start the second half and with 32:13 on the clock, sophomore Dylan Watson scored for a 2-0 lead. Less than a minute later junior Lillian Sandoval, who leads the team with 21 goals, scored on a penalty kick to extend the lead 3-0. The Mustangs best chance to score at 10:19 was thwarted when it appeared Olivia Hendon partially blocked a shot on goal and a save by Wimberley goalkeeper Chloe Row. Watson scored her second goal of the game with 8:18 on the clock and her third goal of the game for a hat-trick with 24 seconds remaining in the game for the 5-0 win.

“I had a couple [hat-tricks] in preseason last year, but it’s my first this year. Yeah, we played well, but right now it’s kind of up and down. When we really click you can see it in the breakaways and chances we have to score. When we connect and do it all the time, we look like a different team and look unstoppable.” Watson said. “That’s where it is and the way it’s supposed to be the whole game, but we’ll get there.”

Continuing district play, Wimberley has a tough game on the road against Davenport (9-0-1 overall; 1-0 district) Feb. 11 before hosting Canyon Lake (7-4-1 overall; 0-0-1 district) at 7 p.m. Feb. 14.
