Lady Tigers win four of five in tournament

Lady Tigers win four of five in tournament
PHOTO BY WAYLAND D. CLARK Dripping Springs’ sophomore Addy Knapp winds up to deliver a pitch in the Wurstfest Tourney against Summer Creek in relief for Sadie Bradford. In the Lady Tigers final game of the tournament Feb. 13-15, Knapp pitched against Elgin to get the win with an 11-0 win in three innings.

The Dripping Springs High School softball team participated in the Wurstfest/ Comal ISD Tourney Feb. 13-15 at Dripping Springs.

The Lady Tigers placed second in their tournament pool after an 11-2 loss Feb. 15 to Summer Creek High School, falling short of a five-game sweep in the tournament with wins over Hays High School 7-6, Lehman High School 11-1, Plano West High School 11-5 and Elgin High School 11-0.

The Lady Tigers’ pitching combination of Sadie Bradford, 2.2 innings and Addy Knapp, 1.1 innings, didn’t give up a base on balls, but nevertheless couldn’t keep the Summer Creek High School Bulldogs, 14 hits, off the base pads. The Bulldogs had an 8-0 lead in the top of the third inning when Dripping Springs head coach Wade Womack called a team meeting outside the Lady Tigers dugout.

“They came out and hit the ball today. We weren’t perfect defensively — four errors — [but] they executed when they needed to,” Womack said after the game.

The Lady Tigers responded in the bottom the third when centerfielder Elanna Amato hit a double and catcher Lorelei Gamble followed with a home run to cut the Bulldog lead to 8-2. Summer Creek added three runs in the top of the fourth, while the Bulldogs pitcher Torie Turner kept the Lady Tigers off the board for the win.

Dripping Springs bounced back in the tourney’s twilight game against Elgin High School with an 11-0 run-rule win over the Wildcats with only one error.

Knapp pitched three innings giving up one hit, no walks and struck out two batters. The Lady Tigers pounded out 13 hits, including a pair of triples from Gamble and Kira Preslar and a Kenna Riley (3 for 3) home run. Tatum Green was also 3 for 3. Bradford had two hits, Gamble, Preslar, Riley, Lilian Wearden and Emma Phillips each had a hit.

“We’ve had some good scrimmages and good games.

We’re young and we’re early in the season, so we’re still trying to find our identity,” Womack said.

The Lady Tigers will host the Brittany Tuck Tournament beginning Thursday, Feb. 20. With expected cold weather on Thursday, the game time is to be determined, but will be updated at www.dsisdtx. us/o/dsisd/page/athletics.

Dripping Springs opens district play Tuesday, Feb. 25, at Akins High School before hosting Austin High School March 4.
