NEW BRAUNFELS — A pair of shutouts, 6-0 and 4-0, in the 4A D2 Area playoff best of three game series May 8-9 against the Pleasanton High School Eagles advanced the Wimberley High School baseball team (20-6-1 overall) to the Regional Semifinals to meet Sweeny High School (23-10-1 overall).
Ty Thames was three for three at the plate with three RBIs. Sage Hall was two for four and had an RBI. Wimberley had six runs on eight hits for the 6-0 win in the first game of the series. The Texans were three for three in stolen bases with Thames, Bryson Anderson and Jayden Hall each getting a steal. The Eagles left nine runners on base. Wimberley pitchers, Gentry McGinnis (8-1, 2.75 ERA) four innings and Jackson Parker (3-1, 1.83 ERA) three innings, combined to strike out five batters.
In game two of the series, Thames, batting .429, was two for three at the plate with a triple and a double. Maverick Jacobs, Cody Stoever, Hall and Jake Dewell each had a hit and Jacobs had a stolen base. Anderson, who leads the team with a .500 batting average, was kept hitless. The pitching duo of Thames, 5.2 innings and Anderson 1.1 innings, combined to strike out seven batters while giving up seven walks, but the Texans .913 fielding percentage kept the Eagles off the board for the 4-0 shut out.
Wimberley’s runs came from six hits, scoring a run in the third inning and three runs in the fourth. Thames is 3-0 on the season with a .79 ERA, has pitched 26.2 innings, given up eight hits, three runs and has 46 strike outs. The Texans have outscored opponents 17-7 in the playoffs.
Wimberley and Sweeny will go head-to-head in a best of three game series, beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 15; game two is at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 16, and a third game, if necessary, will begin 30 minutes after the second game. All games will be played at La Grange High School.
