Herschel Carrico

Herschel William Carrico was born on May 2, 1932 in Amherst,TX, and passed away on June 5, 2025 at the age of 93 years old. Herschel was the son of Katie Carrico and Charlie Carrico. His father was a farmer. His mother was a housewife.

Herschel went to high school at Amherst High School, and graduated in 1947. He went on to earn a certificate in business from Draughon’s Business College. He worked as a Business Manager for Frontier Wholesale in Lubbock, Texas, for over thirty years.

After retiring from Frontier, Herschel and Irene relocated to the Austin area, where he worked for Cabela's for seventeen years.

He was married to Irene Carrico on April 25, 1969. They spent 44 wonderful years together.

Herschel enjoyed life to its fullest, making friends all along the way. He was active in his church in Lubbock, serving on the vestry and as Senior Warden. He coordinated the annual fund raiser BBQ dinner and was known as Mr. Barbeque for all of the briskets he smoked. In retirement, Herschel worked for Cabela's in Buda in Customer Service. He loved that job, and received many awards for his service.

Herschel loved gardening, and maintained a perfectly landscaped lawn. A true "people person", Herschel baked banana nut bread weekly for friends, family, and neighbors. Any visitor was promptly offered a cold Miller Lite beer, in a bottle.

Herschel will be remembered as a loving husband, parent, grandparent, and uncle to his many nieces and nephews.

Herschel was predeceased by father, Charlie Carrico; mother, Katie Carrico; brother, Hubert Carrico, sister, Helen Willis, sister, Hazel Lovelady, spouse, Irene Carrico, grandson Evan Smith, and son-in-law Mike Smith.

He is survived by Glenn Gardner (son), Gaye Gardner (daughter-in-law), Janet Huston (daughter), Gary Williams (son-in-law), Martha Smith (daughter), Kaye Larberg (daughter), Matt Larberg (son-in-law), Dennis Luther (son) and Debra Luther (daughter-in-law).

Also surviving are grandchildren, Jennifer Nuspel, Chris Nuspel, Jordan Nuspel, Jason Craig (Jenna Simpson), Erin Huston (Nick Ytuarte), Cody Luther (Mariah), Eric Smith (Jennifer), and Katie Nelson. Also, great grandchildren Shannon Kuhl (Braison), Gavin Nuspel, Elizabeth Ytuarte, Nicholas Ytuarte, Luke Luther, Ada Mae Smith, and Evan Annette Nelson.

Funeral service will be held at St. Alban's Episcopal Church on June 21 at 10:30 am. Reverend Peggy Lo officiating. Harrell Funeral Home in Kyle, Texas took care of the cremation.
