WIMBERLEY — For the first time in projectART history, the nonprofit will be hosting an art exhibition that has been created and curated entirely by students. The organization’s annual Youth Art Show, featuring artwork from kindergarteners through seventh graders, will be on view from Aug. 22 to Sept. 7 at its contemporary art gallery, ARTSPACE.
In past years, projectART board members would select a wide offering of artwork made by summer camp participants for an annual, camp-culminating gallery show. But after receiving a grant from the Wimberley Civic Club, projectART was able to hire Texas State University senior, Avery Herndon, and Katherine Anne Porter School senior, Conner Carleton, as summer art education interns to assist with projectART summer camps and, more significantly, the Youth Art Show. The interns carefully selected artwork, prepared each piece and installed the exhibit, with guidance from board members and volunteers. For both interns, this was their first experience putting together a contemporary gallery exhibit.
The significance of Herndon's and Carleton’s involvement in this show is monumental, according to a news release, as it is the first time students have curated and installed pieces for a gallery show at ARTSPACE. Herndon's and Carleton’s premiere show also aligns with the organization’s mission to create learning opportunities for upper-level students regarding the logistics and creative intricacies of operating a contemporary art gallery.
The Youth Art Show will kick-off with an opening reception at ARTSPACE from 5-7 p.m. Aug. 22.
