KYLE — During the early morning hours of Nov. 3, 2025, deputies with the Hays County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a shots-fired call in the 500 block of Sante Fe Run in Kyle. Upon arrival, deputies discovered that the homeowner, who had been asleep inside the residence, sustained serious injuries as a result of an apparent drive-by shooting.
Investigators responded to the scene and determined the residence had been struck multiple times by gunfire. Several spent shell casings were recovered from the roadway in front of the home. While speaking with the homeowner and other family members, investigators determined the incident appeared to be a random act with no identifiable motive.
Days after the Sante Fe drive-by shooting, Abraham Herrera was arrested Nov. 12 for a shooting incident in which an AR-style firearm was seized from his possession.
Later, on Dec. 1, investigators became aware of a very similar drive-by shooting that occurred in Martindale, the weekend following Thanksgiving. The suspect in that case, Herrera, was taken into custody shortly after the offense. Hays County investigators were provided digital evidence by the Texas Rangers that helped establish Herrera as the likely suspect in both Incidents.
Herrera was arrested by the Hays County Sheriff’s Office on an outstanding warrant issued by the Texas Rangers Dec. 19.
On Dec. 22, with the assistance of the Austin Police Department, investigators were able to definitively link the spent shell casings recovered from the Kyle shooting scene to the ARstyle firearm previously seized from Herrera.
Herrera was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a first-degree felony Dec. 23. He remains in custody in Hays County.
