Megan McCune, English as a second language teacher at Chapa Middle School, was named as a finalist for the 2026 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards. On Monday, Jan. 12, representatives from H-E-B and Hays CISD, as well as McCune’s family, surprised her with the announcement during class.

Teacher Megan McCune was presented with a $1,000 check from the H-E-B representatives. She is a nationally board certified teacher and recognized Teacher Incentive Allotment teacher, who has been with Hays CISD for five years. The district will also receive $1,000 as a part of the program.

The drumline filled the hallway with a song and cheers for Megan McCune. She is one of 50 finalists across the state that have been or will be recognized. The winners, who will receive additional cash prizes ranging from $5,000 to $25,000, will be announced at a ceremony in Houston May 3.
