SAN MARCOS — The Wimberley High School Texans wasted no time in setting the tone in a 4A Divison 2 Region IV high school playoff game on Friday, Nov. 29, with a 69-28 win against the Cuero High School Gobblers at Texas State University.
Before a minute had run off the clock, Wimberley quarterback Cody Stoever connected with Bryson Anderson for a 77-yard touchdown. The Texans led 35-21 at the half and held Cuero to just seven points in the second half, when the Gobblers returned a kickoff for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter.
“This team still hasn’t played its best football,” head coach Doug Warren said after the game. “We get better each and every week.”
The Texans totaled 531 yards of offense with nine touchdowns against Cuero.
• Stoever completed 10 of 13 passes for 268 yards with five touchdowns and led the team in rushing with 19 carries for 125 yards and two touchdowns
• Josh Belanger had a 65-yard touchdown run
• Jackson Parker, in relief at quarterback for Stoever, scored on a 4-yard run set up by Benji Olmedo, who had nine carries for 61 yards.
• Maverick Jacobs had nine yards rushing
• Nolan Waida led receivers with five receptions for 110 yards and a touchdown
• Jace Morales had two catches for 43 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
• Ty Thames had a 34-yard touchdown reception and a pick-six returning an interception 41 yards for a touchdown.
Cuero had four more turnovers. Jace Cutrona had two interceptions, Connor Michael had an interception and Luke German recovered a fumble. Bo Holman was good on nine of 10 points after touchdowns.
The Wimberley Texans (11-2 overall) will meet Sinton High School (13-0 overall) in the quarterfinals at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6 at Harlandale Memorial Stadium in San Antonio. The winner will face either Sealy High School (10-3 overall) or La Vega High School (10-3 overall) in the semifinals.
