They came in sedans and SUVs, pickup trucks and economy cars, most with trunks already open.
The city of Kyle, in conjunction with Central Texas Food Bank, handed out boxes of food to 1,450 families on May 30 in the vast parking lot of Smile Direct.
An army of volunteers stood by to put in those open trunks boxes of assorted produce, cereals and dried foods, packages of fruit, protein items like meat and dairy products.
“We had a great turnout,” Hays County Chief of Staff and Emergency Management Coordinator Alex Villalobos told the Commissioners Court on Tuesday.
He said he hoped for another large turnout on June 18 at the same location.
Dozens of volunteers contributed to the smooth running of the distribution, which was facilitated by three drive-through lines.
In a break from traditional food bank distribution, no registration or prior dealings with the agency were required — anyone who showed up was given food with no questions asked.
Distributions that do require registration with the Hays County Food Bank are held on a weekly basis — on Tuesdays, from noon to 1 p.m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Kyle; on Wednesdays at Bobcat Stadium Parking lot in San Marcos from 6 to 7 p.m.; and on Thursdays at The Connection Church in Buda from noon to one p.m. Individual households are allowed only one distribution per week.
Additionally, the Hays County Food Bank distributes fresh, frozen and non-perishable foods from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. the first Tuesday of the month at San Marcos High School Rattler Stadium.
