JOHNSON CITY — Pedernales Electric Cooperative (PEC) is accepting nominations through Sept. 17 for its Power Player Award.

The award recognizes high school students who exemplify the "cooperative difference" by exhibiting traits of leadership, dedication to their craft and concern for their community.

“A team player puts in the hard work, gives their all and inspires those around them to be their very best,” said Mikayla Herron, PEC community outreach specialist. “These students lead both in the classroom and in their extracurricular activities, whether that’s football, band or theatre. We want to celebrate their efforts, sportsmanship and achievements and encourage them to participate in other PEC youth programs.”

Cooperatives work for the sustainable development of their communities. As the nation’s largest member‑owned electric cooperative, PEC is member focused and places a high priority on community giving through grants, scholarships, youth programs, appreciation events and more, stated a news release.

“We feel confident that investing in area students is investing in our communities. By providing enriched learning, programs and opportunities, it’s our hope that students will go off to college or trade school and return home to the Hill Country with all the skills and knowledge they’ve gained, so they can continue to strengthen and improve our communities for years to come,” Herron said.

PEC’s Power Player Award is one of several ways the cooperative gives back to area students and teachers through its community engagement programs, the release continued. PEC’s Educational Spotlight Grants help teachers fund dynamic classroom projects and the cooperative also provides $100,000 in scholarships each year to support area high school students. Collectively, these programs highlight the importance of PEC’s values and celebrate members who give back and strengthen their communities.

The deadline to nominate a student for PEC’s Power Player Award is Sept. 17. To be eligible, nominees must attend high school within or surrounded by PEC’s service area. PEC will announce winners and publicly recognize them later this fall.
